Today there are fewer more valuable assets at an airport than space and time. Runways are some of the busiest and also most expensive pieces of real estate in the world, so there is a huge pressure to keep traffic flowing, allowing take-off and landing within intervals of less than a minute. The owner of the airport wants maximum utilisation of his assets, and the passengers want to get to their destination on time. What happens when, due to any unforeseen problem (weather, security problem, technical issues), the runways do not function as intended. Firstly the arriving planes hold over the airport, but after about 15-30 minutes, they run out of fuel and cannot wait any longer and must fly to an alternate airport.
