Atrend for digitisation of archive collections coupled with factors such as space restrictions and the potential for secondary damage due to exposure to water are driving interest in halocarbons for the protection of sensitive collections. Museums and archives a re the guardians for many of the world's collective memories, with culturally significant and irreplaceable artworks, documents and artefacts under their protection. The responsibility to protect and preserve these treasures for future generations is delicately balanced by the need to allow society to access the legacy that these archives hold for appreciation and enjoyment. Achieving this balance requires a range of managerial, technical and financial considerations.
