Wire sawing boosts marble productivity

Along with its natural assets of sun, sand and sea, the island of Langkawi, Malaysia, also has rich reserves of marble in a wide range of colours. For some years now, diamond wire has been used to cut the stone from the quarry face, as described by Ahmad Shukri Abu Bakar of Kedah Marble Industries. Like many other countries in South-East Asia, in recent years Malaysia has enjoyed rapid economic growth. A programme initiated by the government has set an ambitious target of further promoting the industrial sector such that by the year 2010 Malaysia will be one of the leading industrial nations in the region.
