Rheological methods (capillary rheometry) have been used to characterize the behavior of aluminum oxide pastes being extruded into complex geometries for catalyst carriers. The individual pressure losses in the various sections of the capillary rheometry die were determined. The die can be used as a model of the extrusion die that is used for producing honeycomb shaped catalysts. Results of the rheological measurements correlate with the extrusion process and with the quality of the catalysts produced.
