Applications of silicon nitride based ceramics

Silicon nitride based ceramics have unique combinations of mechanical, thermal, phermal, physical, and wear properties. Many opportunities exist to exploit the superior properties of this family of materials for room and moderate temperature (less than 1000 deg.C) applications. This paper will review the current, and likely near term, commercial applications of silicon nitrides. These include: reciprocating engine parts, bearings, cutting tools, and metal forming components. Future trends and directions in silicon nitride based materials will be discussed.
