ISLAM IN THE PROTESTANT ENVIRONMENT OF THE ALOR AND PANTAR ISLANDS

On Alor and Pantar islands in eastern Indonesia, Muslims and some Christians are united by a common history going back to the time of conversion to Islam, when their ancestors agreed the rules of tradition (adat). When inland villages became Protestant Christians in the 20th century, some of them did so only with the agreement of their Muslim neighbours. The two communities intermarry and share ritual and political practices.
