Silkgoods Export and Import during 2009-10: An Analysis

In textile sector, silk is a high value added product as compared to other textile products. Silk is considered as an important sector in Indian economy though its export share is 0.3 to 0.4% only to the total exports of the country. The silk goods exports from India comprises primarily natural silk yarn, fabrics, made-ups, ready-made garments, silk carpets and silk waste. The silk fabrics that include dress materials, sarees and scarves & stoles constitute the bulk of silk exports followed by readymade garments with contribution around 60 and 30%, respectively to the total silk export earnings of the country.
