Indian Railways (IR) with a network of 68,442 Route Km, runs over 22,000 trains daily moving 23 million passengers and 3.3 million tonnes of goods every day on 24x7 hour basis, come what may. The humungous magnitude of operations on IR can be appreciated from the fact that every day it moves people nearly equal to the population of Australia and is in select club of four Railways carrying more than one billion tonnes of freight every year.
