The second half of the 19th Century saw the advent of railways in India which is now entering its 166th year of existence in 2019. It was on 9 March, 1887 that an event of immense importance took place with the signing of a contract between the Bengal Nagpur Railway (BNR) and the Secretary of State in British India to construct railway lines. BNR was born. The construction of line linking Western India with Eastern India started from Nagpur in the west and Asansol in the east in 1891 and these two lines finally joined at Jharsuguda. The line was extended up to Howrah in 1900 and by the process Kolkata was linked with Mumbai as well as Chennai.
