Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has received an order for supply of 4×11 MW turbine-generator sets and associated powerhouse electro-mechanical equipment for Chutak hydroelectric project from NHPC Limited. The project, located in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir, is of strategic national importance. The project is situated in difficult terrain at a very high altitude of 2710m.rnThe hydraulic design of water-passage (low head Francis turbine) suitable for Chutak hydroelectric project was a tough challenge due to the requirement of less submergence at high altitude. The hydraulic design includes design of a flat plate stay ring, stay vanes, matching spiral casing, guide vanes, one variant of runner and draft tube. Optimization of the hydraulic passage has been accomplished by comprehensive CFD analysis. A small scale model of the complete turbine was manufactured and tested to assess various performance parameters of the turbine as per operating conditions at site.
