Impact of Dyeing Industrial Effluent on the Ground Water Quality and Soil Microorganisms in Tirupur

Fourteen soil and ground water samples (open/bore wells) were collected from the areas located in and around Tirupur. The ground water samples were analyzed for the physico-chemical parameters and the results showed that the values of IDS, total hardness and chloride were above the permissible limits for drinking water in most of the samples. Higher values for all the parameters except for nitrate were seen in the bore wells. The bacterial population was more than fungal and actinomycetes population. The microbial count was found to decrease in the places with higher TDS, total hardness and chloride. The actinomycetes population was found to be the least and hence it is suggested that the actinomycetes species are sensitive species to pollution. Isolates taken from the contaminated soil showed lesser enzyme activity. The study also revealed the presence of sodium chloride tolerant moderately halophilic microorganisms (9-10%) and the microbes tolerant to copper, lead, cadmium, chromium and nickel (100 ppm).
