Study on the Water Quality of Kudamurutti River and Nearby Area in Woraiyur of Tiruchirappalli District

Town planning is an excellent feature in India. Now a days, with the growth in population, the proper drainage system has not been established. Disposal of untreated sewage into the river water is another agonizing menance. Sewage water from all the near by residences and MRG-pannai are let into the river Kudamurutti in Woraiyur. The black frothy sewage flows, like a turbulent canal carrying with it a lot of pathogens though not visible. Hence it was felt that monitoring the water quality is very essential not only to prevent diseases and hazards but also to protect the water resources from being polluted further. In the present study water samples have been collected at 10 different locations where about 2000 people reside. The physical parameters, such as temperature, colour, taste, turbidity, conductivity, total dissolved solids and total suspended solids have been determined. The chemical parameter, such as pH, total hardness, calcium hardness, magnesium hardness and the concentrations of carbon dioxide, silica, chloride, sulphate, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and iron have been examined. The water samples have also been tested for the presence of bacteria. A survey has also been carried out to find out the social status, living conditions of the people and their problems encountered on using the water for drinking purpose.
