Concrete mix proportioning as per new revised IS 10262:2009

The new code on "Concrete Mix Proportioning- Guidelines" IS 10262:2009 recently brought out by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) brings relief to many stake holders of Construction Industry specially for concrete making. Previously, the fourth revision of IS 456 published in the year 2000 was a milestone in the Code of practice for "Plain and Reinforced Concrete". Bringing IS 10262 in line with IS 456 with reference to concrete making materials, minimum cement content, maximum water-cement ratio and minimum grade of concrete for various exposure conditions from durability point of view fulfils the need for aligning these two codes. The new Standard has been specified for ordinary and standard concrete grades (as defined in IS 456:2000). Modifications in the code are for water content and coarse aggregate content and are in line with present practices of proportioning concrete mixes in other countries including USA. This paper looks at the major modifications in the first revision and provides examples of concrete mix proportioning following the new Standard.
