Residential masonry constructions and their earthquake safety in the rural area of Mandi district

Despite of codal provisions for an earthquake resistant design, many constructions in rural areas lack of earthquake resistant features. The reason is that engineers are not involved in the design process. Instead, untrained masons are in charge of construction activities. The study highlights shortfalls in load bearing masonry constructions in rural areas of Mandi district. Paper intends to present basic earthquake resistant design considerations for the benefit of semi-skilled work forces in rural areas, owners and others stake holders.
