Structural design is important and relevant to all type of buildings and not just for tall structures. There are countless village homes designed by small time contractors and masons based on the knowledge passed on to them by their so-called Guru's! An ill-designed house in an earthquake-prone area is a killer waiting to happen. There are no statistics available on count of deaths caused due to ill designs, but my guess is this would be an astounding number! Our first paper is on this subject where basic earthquake-resistant design considerations for the benefit of semi-skilled rural work force, owners and others stake holders are discussed.
