POISON FISHING IN PONDS AND TANKS, ITS PERSISTENT TOXICITY ON ECOSYSTEM AND PROBABLE HEALTH HAZARDS

The use of chemical pesticides to immobilize and catch fishes from ponds and tanks have become widespread in urban areas, especially around Kolkata. The affected fishes are sold in the Market and people purchase them for cheapness. An attempt has been made to know the persistent toxicity of one such widely used fish poison (Thiodan 35 EC) in laboratory and field on tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), the hardiest of fishes. The pesticide residue in affected fish flesh, its degradation and denaturing on cooking are required to be investigated in details.
