The Federal Communications Commission by unanimous action has adopted what is essentially the IMSA supported Consensus Plan, with some minor changes which should be of no major consequence to public safety. By now I am sure you are familiar with the 800 MHz issue where public safety licensees have been receiving interference from commercial mobile radio service licensees. If not, read my article in the July/August 2004 issue of the IMSA Journal for background. The plan will require the 806-824 / 851-869 MHZ band to be reorganized, with General Category and Public Safety NPSPAC licensees being required to move out of the respective 806-809 / 851-854 and 821-824/866-869 MHZ portions of the band and Nextel relinquishing its licenses in the interleaved spectrum and at 700 MHZ. All licensees that must retune or relocate their systems will be entitled to comparable facilities in the 800 MHZ band and reimbursement of relocation costs. Nextel will lose 4.5 MHZ of spectrum in the 800 MHZ band.
