In this series of articles, we previously covered the traditional methods of off-premises reporting, that is, notification of an alarm to an emergency receiving center, usually the fire dept or designated authority. These methods have been in use for many years, but the advent of the microprocessor is causing a drastic change in methods of reporting. This is mostly due to the fact that the traditional methods mostly depended on the use of metallic lines that are common to the POTS (Plain Old Telephone System). The proliferation of cell phones and internet applications has resulted in the gradual abandoning of metallic wires and replacing them with digital signaling over fiberoptic cables or via wireless.
