New impetus for co-ordinated approach to ship recycling through new legally binding instrument

A Joint Working Group on ship scrapping established by IMO, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Parties to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal has concluded its second meeting. Since the first meeting of the Joint Working Group in February 2005, the IMO's Assembly has adopted a resolution seeking the development of a legally binding instrument on ship recycling.
