Werner Eymann concludes his series on laser display technologies with a look to the future, where, he says, lasers alone may not be enough. But even the laser projector may not be enough by itself - the future may require realistic 4D displays, which means 3D displays utilising the fourth dimension, the time domain. Theory: In nature we see two pictures with our two eyes and interpret this -according to our experience - as a three-dimensional subject. This is the effect of very complex processing in our brain. Thus a very crisp sharp picture for one eye has to have an even crisp and sharp counterpart for the other. Until now we know systems with glasses - anaglyph systems based on two colours, polarised systems based on polarisation filters, shutter glasses - or helmets with two separate screens for the eyes. Autostereoscopic systems are very different, using none of these means.
