Graduate Program for Biomedical Technology Development Launched

In the world of medical technology development, a chasm sometimes exists between the scientists who create devices and the professionals who handle the business, regulatory affairs, and reimbursement issues related to the products. Educational and professional backgrounds vary greatly, and often the different groups don't understand one another's work. To address this, two institutions of higher learning have come together to create a unique graduate degree program that blends the science of medical technology development with the business of regulatory affairs and quality assurance. The program-established by Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and Virginia Tech's National Capital Region-was launched this fall and is called "master of science in biomedical technology development and management." "We initially targeted those who are already working in medical technology development and want to advance in the field to enroll in the program," says Jim Bohland, vice president and executive director of operations for Virginia Tech's National Capital Region. "But we've been surprised to find that a number of new graduates from bachelors and masters programs have expressed interest in the program. Many already know that they want to work in the medical technology field, and perhaps start their own business someday."
