Industry experts meet to advance use of standards in news industry

Standards organisations and content companies met for the first time in Philadelphia late last year about a new generation of standards for the news industry, based on XML (see XML business value story on page 40). XML-based standards are rapidly gaining acceptance in the news industry, especially in Japan where there has been wide adoption of NewsML, or among the blogging community with more than 1 million RSS (really simple syndication) feeds. But the spread of these new standards is contained by tighter IT investment budgets and by legacy constraints ― especially so among the more traditional newspapers.
