Development of High performance ERC32 processor emulator based on Dynamic Translation Emulation Method

Currently developing satellites by KARI use the MCMERC32SC processor for on-board computer (OBC). The software-based spacecraft simulator was developed for the flight software (FSW) development and testing using TSIM-ERC32 processor emulator from Aeroflex Gaisler. This simulator has been used for the FSW development and verification. It also will be used for ground operation training, LEOP operation and FSW maintenance after launch. The processor in OBC of next-generation LEO satellite will be changed from ERC32 to LEON3, but the software-based LEON3 (such as TSIM-LEON3) emulator cannot meet the real time performance because of the high performance of LEON3 processor. To resolve this problem, ESA develops the hardware-based processor emulator but it is limited to LEON2 processor. Another approach from ESA, dynamic translation emulator is developed, which offers performance improvement of 5-10 times over traditional emulators while retaining the benefits of software based emulators. This papers presents the development of the ERC32 emulator based on open source dynamic translator, QEMU, as the first step. And it describes the software development and testing/debugging on developed emulator.
