Lens optics technology is reviewed for design and fabrication of fan-in/fan-out device to connect multi-core fiber to single mode fibers. Design principle of space coupling between a multi-core fiber and single mode fibers is described using spatial beam conversion theory for fan-in/fan-out devices. The optical characteristics of the fabricated fan-in/fan-out device are evaluated including insertion loss, polarization dependent loss, crosstalk characteristics, wavelength dependence of the insertion loss and return loss. We discuss the feasibility of the devices for multi-core fiber transmission systems.%近年の著しい通信容量増大に対応する手段の一つとして、1本の光ファイバに複数の伝搬コアを有するマルチコアファイバ(MCF)の研究•開発が行われている。
