For short-propagation paths, correctly representing reflections ofnelectromagnetic energy from surfaces is critical for accuratensignal-level predictions. In this paper, the method of homogenization isnused to determine the effective material properties of compositenmaterials commonly used in construction. The reflection coefficients fornblock walls and other types of materials calculated with thesenhomogenized effective material properties are presented. The importancenof accurately representing the reflections for signal-level predictionnmodels is also investigated. It is shown that a 5-10-dB error innreceived signal strength (RSS) can occur if the composite walls are notnhandled appropriately. Such accurate predictions of signal propagationnover a short distance is applicable to microcellular personalncommunications services deployments in urban canyons as well as indoornwireless private branch exchanges and local-area networks
