The problem of designing a front-end prefilter to improve thenperformance and/or reduce the complexity of maximum likelihood sequencenestimation equalization of space-time-coded signals is addressed in thisnpaper. The front-end prefilter performs channel shortening withoutnexcessive noise enhancement and is constrained to be a finite impulsenresponse filter for practical implementation. Transmission scenariosnemphasized assume two transmit antennas (with delay diversity ornspace-time trellis coding) and either one or two receive antennas.nExtensions to more antennas are straightforward. Various designnparameters (such as number of prefilter taps, number of equalizernstates, and decision delay) are optimized using Monte Carlo simulationsnin a typical urban EDGE environment
