Ordered Fe-Pt perpendicular magnetic recording media were studied in terms of the effects of magnetic domain sizes on the recording performances. As the domain size decreased, the magnetization reversal changed from the wall motion to the rotational mode, and the medium noise reduced. A high SNR, 39 dB/sub p-p/rms/, was achieved for a track width of 2.7 /spl mu/m at a recording density of 100 kFRPI for a single-layer medium with an 82 nm magnetic domain size. On the other hand, little recording demagnetization was observed in the medium with a steep slope in the M-H loop. A composite medium with a soft-magnetic backlayer exhibited an extremely high signal output. The possibility of high recording resolution was discussed by the MFM spectrum analysis for the recording patterns.
