The Importance of Advisor-Advisee Relationships in Graduate School

Have you ever felt uneasy in a relationship, but you could not figure out the exact problem? My advisor was quiet and passive for a while, and he kept hiding his concerns until I met with him to fill out my annual review form, which was required by the department to evaluate the progress of graduate students from the viewpoint of their advisor. I had the toughest conversation with my advisor that day, and it led me to examine the importance of the advisor?advisee relationship. I talked to many faculty members and graduate students about their experiences regarding this issue after that meeting. Little by little, I noticed that the main reason for that tough conversation was my advisor's concerns about my success, but it was hard for me to understand that in the beginning.
