The rise and rise of optical fibers

During the second half of the 20th Century there were severalntechnological revolutions, one of the most important being thensupplanting of telecommunication over copper wires, and of muchnsatellite communication, by optical transmission over glass fibers. Thisnhas transformed, and continues to transform, our handling ofninformation. It has, along with software and microelectronics, creatednthe information society
