Properties of the recently introduced family of coupled resonatornoptical waveguides (CROWs) are reviewed, particularly with reference tonCROWs designed as planar waveguides in two-dimensional photonic crystalnslabs to enhance nonlinear interactions and develop novel all-opticalninformation processing devices. Topics covered include: pulsenpropagation both in the nondispersive approximation and to all orders ofndispersion, and the coupled mode theory of nonlinear optics with pulsesnin CROWs and its applications to second-harmonic generation and wavencoupling via field-induced refractive-index gratings. We also reviewnrecent experimental progress in the fabrication and characterization ofnCROWs, and applications of the CROW concept to fiber gratings andnmicrowave waveguides
