College Librarianship in West Bengal : A Librarian's Perspective

After getting into the profession, librarians need to serve its user community with dedication and with a spirit of service. This paper tries to reveal the real fact towards accepting college libraries as a place of one's professional career. Due to the sea changes in the field of librarianship, many challenges are faced by college librarians now-a-days. This paper raises some issues and challenges indicating the probable solutions. Though it is largely accepted implicit fact that librarians' work & service are more important than that of a teacher, but does it explicitly presented in the today's society, does it really reflected through the mindset of the concerned authority. Though there are favorable recommendations by education commissions, a number of anomalies in government rules and orders are referred in this paper. Self contradictory recent orders of UGC and the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt, of India are also pointed out in this paper for discussion. It is felt that library associations have important roles to play to put forward legitimate demands to the Government. This paper also reveals that the college library professionals are needed to join library association to strengthen the library movement which would definitely address the professional issues.
