The energy of the velocity of river flows (flows in artificial canals, any other free-surface flows) is utilized by means of so-called damless, or free-flowing, hydropower plants. The following suppositions can be expressed concerning the potential of this type of energy. With respect to the potential of an individual site. From a formal viewpoint, the energy of flow (kinetic Energy, energy of the velocity head) in the cross section of the stream is equal to N = 9.81 QH, Where Q is the flow rate of water in the cross section under consideration; H is the velocity head, equal to H = αV~2/2g, Where α is the kinetic-energy correction factor; V is the average flow velocity in the stream cross section.
