Hydrographic & Geographic Information Systems for Shipping - Requirements and Development Trends

The technologies of Hydrographic and Geographic Information Systems can be merged either with or without navigational functions to form Marine Information Systems. The future basis of such systems will be the Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) and technologies evolving from Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS). The author predicts that international standardisation of ENC and ECDIS will not only influence development of future navigation systems but also the data structure and storage as well as retrieval functions of general purpose Marine Information Systems, both for shipborne and land-based users.%Les techniques des systèmes d'information géographique et hydrographique peuvent être associées ou non ans fonctions de navigation pour former des Systèmes d'Information Maritime. La base future de tels systèmes sera la Carte de Navigation Electronique -Electronic Navigational Chart - (ENC) et les techniques qui se développeront a partir des Systèmes Electroniques de Visualisation des Cartes Marines (SEVCM) - Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS). L'auteur prévoit que la normalisation internationale de l'ENC et de l'ECDIS non seulement influenceront le développement des systèmes de la future navigation, mais également la structure des données et leur sauvegarde ainsi que les fonctions de récupération des systèmes d'Information Maritime d'emploi général, tant pour les utilisateurs à bord d'embarcations que pour ceux basés sur terre.
