What started as one employee's effort to clean up a small portion of the Coosa River in Alabama is now a massive annual river system cleanup effort involving thousands of volunteers and spanning four states.rnWhile working at Alabama Power Company's Gadsden steam plant on the Coosa River, Gene Phifer was dismayed by the amount of trash and litter at the water intake and along the nearby river banks. To deal with this situation, Phifer organized a small group of plant employees to clean up the shoreline next to the facility.
