Using a Variable Power Limiter for Francis Unit Governors

A typical governor on a Francis turbine may impose undue restrictions on the range of a unit's operation because it uses fixed limits for gate position and/or electrical power. The use of a variable power limiter based on the gate openings that are available in the digital governor allows the unit to operate within the full range of operating zones guaranteed by the turbine-generator supplier and overcomes the shortcomings of undue restrictions.
