Small hydro facilities offer an important means for addressing the needs of people in rural regions worldwide. Where residents of rural areas lack access to electricity — a condition affecting one-fourth of the world's population — they largely are without the means for improving their work efficiency and living conditions. Yet, when villages and communities obtain access to dependable, affordable electricity, they gain a foundation that enables residents to embark on paths of economic development and lifestyle improvement. Often, the benefits of gaining electricity are rapid and dramatic. For example: having artificial lighting can "extend the day" for both economic and educational activities; using electricity instead of firewood can turn the tide against deforestation, and can bring health improvements due to avoiding the inhaling of smoke from open fires.
