Using Diagnostic Tools to Understand Abnormal Generator Behavior

As part of a five-year refurbishment program, Brazilian utility Furnas Centrals Eletricas S/A is installing a machine condition monitoring system on each of ten turbine-generators at its 476-MW Mascarenhas de Moraes power plant. During commissioning of one unit, the monitoring system recorded unusual behavior of the generator. The utility is working with the refurbishment contractor to address the problem. This example shows the value of using condition monitoring tools.
