Unique Performance Aspects of PTFE-Lined Thrust Bearings

There are several advantages of using PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) composites as a substitute for babbitt in the lining of thrust bearing pads — especially for hydroelectric equipment subjected to severe operating conditions. Yet, the properties of PTFE composites create some unique aspects of bearing performance. Understanding these peculiarities can help plant operators better know what to expect of machines with PTFE-lined thrust bearings.
