Generator Monitor for Measuring Partial Discharge

Kansai Electric Power Co. Inc. in Japan uses a new portable monitor to measure partial discharge in its hydroelectric generators while the units are operating. To date, Kansai has used the monitor to measure partial discharges in generator stator coils in more than 130 hydro plants. The utility plans to use the portable monitor at all 239 of its hydro units. Engineers in the hydropower electrical engineering group at the utility's Power System Engineering Center collaborated with engineers at Mitsubishi Electric Co. to develop the monitor. Development of the monitor fits into Kansai's overall effort to move toward a condition-based maintenance program for its 8,146 mw of hydro capacity.
