'As it Is': By the head of the Head of the Bulgarian Navy Hydrographic Service

The Bulgarian Hydrographic Service is a subdivision of the Bulgarian Navy and its main task is to provide information for safe navigation in Bulgarian territorial waters. The Hydrographic Service was founded in 1883, when the first hydro-meteorological surveys had been carried out. Naval charting dates back to 1887. But the really intensive and systemised surveys of seawaters for the requirements of Navy and commercial navigation began in the 1950s. During the 1980s the Hydrographic Service established contacts with the International Hydrographic Organization and such contacts became more regular and dynamic after Bulgaria was accepted as associated member of IHO in 1987.
