Courier fleet to run hybrids on Li-ion batteries

International courier UPS has ordered 50 "new-generation" hybrid electric delivery trucks equipped with Eaton Corporation's parallel hybrid drive system. The hybrids are being purchased in two sizes, 700-cubic-ft. and 1,000-cubic-ft. cargo capacities, from International Truck and Engine and Freight-liner LLC, UPS spokesperson Heather Robinson tells HEV Progress. The trucks will feature lithium-ion batteries that are capable of faster recharging and have a longer life than batteries used in previous generations of HEVs. The truck bodies will be identical externally to the signature-brown trucks the company uses in its fleet now.
