Research for Prevention of Infectious Animal Diseases: Activities of the Veterinary Medical Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences

The Veterinary Medical Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences was established by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1949 in order to help reduce the losses due to infectious diseases caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites. The instituewas housed in the historical building of the earlier "Vaccine Production Institute", where Prof, A. Aujeszky (discoverer of the Aujeszky's disease) lived and worked as a director and head of the Hungarian Royal Bacteriology Institute (Figs.L, 2). In 1953, the institute was grouped under the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and today it is one of the 45 research institutes of the Academy.
