IMPLEMENTING SHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS AN INTRODUCTION

To introduce and implement ship management systems is not a simple task. It will require engineers with a great deal of experience and training. Long ago SpecTec has decided that it will not use engineers who have not previously been sailing for a number of years or obtained sufficient experience in this field elsewhere. Some ship managers prefer to employ recently graduated cadets to implement the system on board since the implementation done by an engineer with experience in this field is costly. It has also been suggested to employ the superintendent when he is onboard at the same time. This will at best mean that the system will be finally implemented one year after it should be and at worst give both producer and owner as the responsible part a bad reputation for introducing an unworkable system. Moreover, the new system will not give any benefit to anybody and definitely not the aimed cost reduction and improved quality one was looking for.
