Section One: Affordable Housing and Housing Affordability Introduction

This Special Issue includes two sections, the first of which has been compiled to mark the contribution of Christine Whitehead to the study of housing on the occasion of her formal (although happily only partial) retirement. Christine Whitehead has played a leading role in British and international housing economics research for four decades. She has discovered and mentored young researchers, built the Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research (formerly Property Research Unit) and contributed ideas and evidence for research on housing markets and finance systems. She has been a consistent, sometimes uncomfortable, source of advice to governments. The European Network for Housing Research's work on housing finance has been guided by Christine for a more than a decade. She was awarded the OBE for services to housing in 1991. Christine has contributed across a broad spectrum of areas within the general field of housing research. In many respects her work is reflected in the theme chosen for this Special Issue-affordable housing and housing affordability.
