RHS Announces Availability Of Fiscal 2005 Housing Funds

The Rural Housing Service (RHS) published in the March 14 Federal Register five notices of funding availability (NOFAs) for rural multifamily rental housing and single-family homeownership loans and grants. Applications for $99.2 million available for Section 515 direct rural rental housing loans must be submitted to RHS state offices by May 13. The total includes $25.8 million for new construction, with set-asides for nonprofits, underserved counties and colonias, and empowerment zones (EZs), enterprise communities (ECs), and rural economic area partnership (REAP) zones. The total also includes $53.4 million for rehabilitation and repair and $20 million in a general reserve. New construction applications will be scored by the state offices on leveraging other funding; location in underserved counties, colonias, or EZs, ECs, or REAP zones; commitment of other state resources, including low-income housing tax credits; and donated land. Individual loan requests are limited to $1 million. In addition, $1 million is available nationwide for rental assistance (RA) for states that have matching RA programs.
