Washington, D.C., Housing Authority Builds First Single-Family Units At Capitol Gateway Development

The District of Columbia Housing Authority (DCHA) reached a landmark at the 761-unit Capitol Gateway redevelopment with the construction of the first single-family rental and homeownership units at the site east of the Capitol Building. The new housing development replaces East Capitol Dwellings, which for many years during the 1980s and 1990s was a high-crime area. About 1,000 old-style public housing units at the development and nearby Capitol View Plaza were torn down with the use of HOPE VI funds.
