CDC AND DESIGN STUDIO TEAM TO PROVIDE AFFORDABLE HOUSING

The Rio Grande Valley of Texas contains the top two poorest communities in the U.S. Brownsville sits at number 1; McAllen is second. The Atlantic magazine produces an online entity known as "Citylab;" a recent feature examined the remarkable progress made by combining a community development corporation (CDC) with the efforts of a design studio in meeting the needs of a community that has been ill-served in the past. Together, the design studio bcWorkshop and the Community Development Corporation of Brownsville (CDCB) have built an attractive, 56-unit complex of affordable housing called La Hacienda Casitas. Author Amanda Kolson Huntley details the steps taken by the design firm to get the CDCB to slow down enough to get input from the homes' future owners.
