Left hand/right hand - does it matter?

Is it safer to drive on the right hand or left hand side of a road? Does the rule of the road affect accident rates? According to some research, there is a correlation. In my capacity with the Association of British Drivers as its advisor on traffic engineering, I have been writing a series of articles for the Association's journal On The Road, based on J. J. Leeming's seminal book on road safety, Road Accidents: Prevent or Punish? Although published in 1969, this work is more applicable today than ever, as the governments of countries such as the UK, Australia and others have adopted road safety policies based almost entirely on enforcement.
