Like many free spirits in early-1970's London, Christopher Fair was an abstract painter. But on a 1984 trip to the weaving villages of Canakkale in western Turkey, the Slade School of Fine Art alumnus had a conversion,experience. "I fell in love with the way the hand-spun wool absorbs the dye," he recalls. "It becomes saturated in In inconsistent way, like a great painting by Mark Rothko.' Four years later, Farr founded his namesake London rug shop with dealer and restorer Matthew Bourne. The pair originally sold Farr's own patterns alongside antique and tribal rugs and a slew of collaborations with emerging and established designers, Romeo Gigli and Andree Putman among them.
