Shanghai Jin Jiang International Hotels, Shanghai, has found that recruiting on-property managers for its expanding portfolio in China involves a significant investment in training because of high employee turnover due to the massive influx of new supply and the hotel industry's relative immaturity in the country. "There is high employee turnover because everyfourdays a new international hotel is opening in China, and most are full-service," says Bernold Schroeder, CEO of Jin Jiang International Hotel Management Co. "You have to constantly retrain, retrain and retrain because there are so many opportunities for employees. In China we have 1.1 job offers for every available employee in the industry, so everyone has a choice to work somewhere else. Also, working in a hotel is notsuch a traditional vocation as in other parts of Asia that have had developed tourism markets for many years."
